Twitter integration into Google's desktop results has been spotted. Until these recent findings, only mobile results had.

In May, Google began showing Twitter listings within its mobile search results within the US. Now it looks like those might be coming to desktop and beyond the US.

The folks at Conductor found Twitter integration showing up in Google’s desktop results in the UK. Here’s an example:
tweets are finally viewable on Google
Conductor tells us they’ve spotted this integration for several celebrities and large brands, but only when checking results within the UK.

We can’t replicate the results, but it could be that Conductor got tagged into an experimental group, which is common for how Google tests. We’re checking with Google for any official confirmation.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that the company has been experimenting with displaying Twitter in desktop search results since mid-July: “We don’t have more to announce for now.”

Alphabet, is Absorbing Google...

Google, as a subsidiary retains divisions of ads, apps, search, Android, YouTube, and more. It also gains Sundar Pichai as a new CEO

Google Alphabet

Google’s being acquired. Its new owner will be Alphabet, a palace coup pulled off by Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Page is to become CEO of the new Alphabet, Brin his president and Sundar Pichai, formally senior vice president of Android, Chrome and Apps at Google, takes over as Google CEO.

Page shared the news today both on the Google blog and on the new Alphabet site. He wrote:

Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable. So we are creating a new company, called Alphabet. I am really excited to be running Alphabet as CEO with help from my capable partner, Sergey, as President.

What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google. This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of our main internet products contained in Alphabet instead. What do we mean by far afield? Good examples are our health efforts: Life Sciences (that works on the glucose-sensing contact lens), and Calico (focused on longevity). Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren’t very related.

Alphabet will be replacing Google as the traded entity, with all shares of Google converting to Alphabet stock. It will still be known as GOOG and GOOGL, however. The company has also filed a Form 8-K here with the US Securities & Exchange Commission, outlining its plans.
What’s Part Of Alphabet?

What makes up the alphabet of the new Alphabet? From the filing and blog post, Alphabet includes
  1. Calico (the folks who want you to live forever)
  2. Fiber (high speed internet)
  3. Google (Search, Maps, YouTube, Android, Ads, Apps)
  4. Google Ventures (venture capital business)
  5. Google Capital (investment fund)
  6. Google X (auto-driving cars, Google Glass, internet by balloon, moonshots)
  7. Life Sciences (the glucose-sensing contact lens people)
  8. Nest (smoke alarms, home cameras, thermostats & connected home devices)
It’s unclear where many other things will go. Project Fi, Google’s virtual mobile network, for example. Will that stay part of Google or roll under Alphabet? That’s not been made clear.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that YouTube — which has its own CEO in the form of long-time Googler Susan Wojcicki — hasn’t been rolled out from under Google.
It might be that after the initial transition, this and other spin-outs could happen.

Tweets fly back into Google search results after four years of being outcast

Jump Start Social Marketing Google & Twitter Picture

It's been a long time coming, but tweets are finally viewable on Google (again). The company announced a partnership that'll see real-time shares from Twitter re-embedded within search results, nearly four years after the end of an earlier agreement forced Google to remove them. Tweets are returning to mobile first -- "any browser on your phone or tablet," Google says -- and desktop in the near future. They're limited to English, for now.

Tweets integrate as you might expect -- searching for a specific Twitter account, hashtag, or trending topic (e.g., "NASA Twitter," "#MadMenFinale," or "NBA Finals") yields a scrollable carousel of relevant tweets at the top of search results. The tweets themselves are a little pared down from what you might see on Twitter, but still replete with pertinent media like photos, links, and post timestamps. As far as tweet discovery goes, it seems quite useful.

Sophos Uncovers Mass Link Spam In Google’s Search Results Via Cloaked PDFs - See more at: http://www.jumpstartsocialmarketing.com/blog/sophos-uncovers-mass-link-spam-in-googles-search-results-via-cloaked-pdfs#sthash.3wndpcgL.dpuf

Hackers use PDF documents to inject links and keywords and -- through cloaking techniques -- scam searchers to go to other web sites.
Picture

Sophos, an IT security company, has uncovered a case of Google search spam involving “hundreds of thousands” of cloaked PDF documents with links that redirect human users to suspicious websites. It’s similar to the long-running type of hacking/spamming that involves placing HTML-based web pages on hacked websites, but in this case involves placing PDFs. The technique may not be necessarily new, but Sophos documented cases where the PDF content is ranking highly in Google’s search results.

The company informed Google about this technique, but decided to publish their findings after not hearing back from Google. We also reached out to Google early this morning and have not heard back.

Sophos said they think this technique works because “Google implicitly trusts PDFs more than HTML.” Honestly, we are not so sure how true that statement is. Nevertheless, the process the hackers/spammers used was to hack into web sites, plant these PDFs or modify the PDFs with links, while also cloaking the documents so the normal user would be redirected to a spam site.

What Sophos found inside those PDFs was “a large amount of similar documents on a number of legitimate, but unrelated and likely compromised, websites. In addition to the heavy use of specific keywords, the PDFs include links to documents planted on other websites, forming a so-called back link wheel.”

Then through cloaking, any human web user that tried to click on the PDF would be taken to another site, not the PDF.

Sophos shared an example of a search result with the spam:

Poisoned Search Results on Google

The URLs blocked out contained these cloaked PDF documents. But when the user clicked to see the PDF, they would go to a web site, such as this one:
bad link google

What Google saw was not the web site, but the PDF with the links. Here is a picture of what GoogleBot saw, since Google was being served the PDF while the user was being redirected to the web site above:

Be on the lookout for 'Buy' Buttons in Google Search Results

Google Buy buttom
You want it. You search for it. You buy it.

Simple, right? Everyone's default search engine, Google, wants to make the process at least one step faster. In the coming weeks, the tech giant will be launching "buy" buttons on its search-results pages, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

When a person searches Google for a particular product, he or she might see a button within the results pages to buy said product directly. Click on the button and the person will be directed to another Google product page to complete the transaction.

The buttons will appear only within sponsored results toward the top of the page and be available first to mobile users, the Journal said.

So, Google is transcending search and getting into e-commerce, like Amazon. Perhaps. When contacted by Entrepreneur, a Google spokesperson said the company has "no comment to offer at this time."
When users click a buy button from a Google Shopping ad, they’ll be taken to a special landing page on Google to make sizing and color selections and complete the purchase, according to the report. Retailers will continue to handle all order processing and shipping operations. The sources did say Google would enable opt-ins to merchant marketing programs, meaning retailers could continue to market to their customers as they do when transactions occur on their own sites. Whether that will be enough of a carrot to appease large retailers remains to be seen.

Google saw similar reluctance from merchants with its Trusted Stores program, which until earlier this year, required retailers to share order and shipping data feeds with the search giant in order to participate. Many merchants balked at those requirements. While there is no hard data on participation rates, people I’ve spoken to have said participation among their clients increased significantly when Google dropped the data-sharing rules.

Customer payment information will not be passed on the retailers, and Google will reportedly offer several payment options and allow customers to save their payment details for future purchases.

In a departure from Amazon and Ebay, participating Google Shopping advertisers will not have to forego a percentage of the transaction. Instead Google will continue to charge per ad click, according to the report. That could help entice large retailers that have resisted Amazon participation but can see the value in reducing consumer friction in the buying process on mobile devices, in particular. (Facebook’s move to host publisher content directly in its the app rather than act as the referrer on mobile devices can be seen in the same vein; on mobile, platforms are becoming holistic environments that corral user activity within their walls.)

Google debuted links to food delivery ordering and table and appointment-booking services last week in Google Search and Google Maps just last week. It’s among the search engine’s efforts to adapt to consumers’ mobile behavior. Mobile Friendly Ad Units for auto-makers and dealerships, hotel booking services were announced at a gathering of search advertisers at which the company said for the first time that mobile searches have now surpassed those on desktop in ten countries, including the U.S.

Be on the lookout for 'Buy' Buttons in Google Search Results

As the search engine adjusts to mobile behaviors, it is set to take on Amazon in the battle for the mobile transaction.

Google Testing “Value Alert" and "Special Offer" Notice In Google Shopping Ads

Google has another test running on product listing ads, this time one that highlights “value” and "offers" on products. While doing some a marketing study for a client, Jump Start Social Marketing discovered the test displays a “Special Offer” message at the bottom of the ad. What’s interesting is that the ad from the Thorlos.com is that it does not have the lowest product price among the ads shown. The ad shown from Dick's Sporting Goods has by far the lowest price at $11.99. Rather it may be that Google is testing a new way of showing items that are on sale or significantly discounted, not just the lowest priced.  This being why some are seeing "Value Alert" or "Special Offer" on the products. (Read More)

Wall Street Journal Reports: Yelp Seeking A Potential Buyer

Yelp's market cap is $2.9 billion, a sale could fetch more than $3.5 billion.
Yelp's market cap is $2.9 billion, a sale could fetch more than $3.5 billion. - See more at: http://www.jumpstartsocialmarketing.com/blog/wall-street-journal-reports-yelp-seeking-a-potential-buyer#sthash.Ac9RMyCf.dpuf

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Yelp is working with investment bankers and has “been in touch with potential buyers” to explore a sale of the company.  Yelp's market cap is $2.9 billion, a sale could fetch more than $3.5 billion sale range.

Before Yelp went “public,” Google unsuccessfully tried to buy the company for more than $500 million. It would be interesting to see if Google gets involved in any bidding that could happen… if this is a legitimate story.  Apple also has a connection with Yelp.  It is sat to imagine that would imagine that would make Apple a serious contender to purchase Yelp, as well.  Other companies that are possibly in the mix are Microsoft, Yahoo, and Facebook.  This is also accompanied with Travel companies given the review format of Yelp.

Last quarter Yelp reported revenues of $118.5 million. That represented 55 percent revenue growth.  Given these numbers, investors, were not satisfied with these numbers.  If Yelp is going on market, I would wonder if this signifies the long term ability to “Stay” in the mix with review sites.

We all know that advertising has changed the face or the net…just try to watch a video on YouTube.  Search sites have also taken advantage of this.  So how has Yelp shown such revenue growth?  Yelp disclosed it had 90,000 local advertisers, 77 million reviews (total), and 142 million users in its Q1 earnings release.

Coming In May Twitter’s Full Google Search Integration

If you feel that your "Tweets" are not found on Google, that may be true to some extend, however that is going to change.  Not all details are known yet, but “firehose” from Twitter  is coming to Google sometime next month.

Dick Costolo , (Twitter CEO) said during Twitter’s 1st quarter earnings call  to "expect the integration to be rolled out in May", but that "he didn’t have a specific date to share." He also mentioned, "that Twitter is talking with Apple to introduce Twitter content into Spotlight search on iOS and OS X devices."

Costolo didn’t elaborate on what to expect from the integration with Apple or Google. He added, “That Google deal and relationship is all about driving our total audience strategy.   The goal is to get people to consume content and engage with that content whether they log in or not.”

Search Engine Result Page...Oh you mean SERP

Search Engine Result Page, a.k.a. a SERP, comes in two forms. Paid SERP and Organic SERP.
Basically, it just means that a SERP is a list of Web pages.  If you have spent much time at all on Google, Bing, Yahoo, or your favorite search engine you have seen these before. Below is a picture of both organic and paid SERP from Google.

Jump Start Social Marketing Google Search

SERP's are important for your business.  There is no argument to this.  How your business will appear to the person searching will either lead them to you, or away from you.  Sometimes if this is a flooded market  it will be difficult to reach that customer due to "Paid" SERPS.   There are tips for making your page, or business stand out against paid SERPS.
  1. Work toward your specific content.  Your Customers may know who you are, and even what you do, but if you can be as specific as possible about your site, this can help your customer find you easier.  If you were the owner of Alabama Wholesale Socks, and someone searched for "Wholesale Socks" several business who sale wholesale would appear. However if your business, Alabama Wholesale Socks, sold a specific brand, Let's say Doc's Med Socks, and someone searched for "Wholesale Doc's Med Socks" you would rank high or highest among search engines.  Generalization does not work as well as specifics.
  2. Research the key words that best describe you. Keywords, are what describe what you do.  If you are a teacher, you would not need the keyword for small engine repair to be a word you key words.  Using <tags> correctly will help with this in your <meta> information.  This is geek talk, by the way.
  3. Consider PPC.  Yet another acronym.  Yes Paid Per Click may be valuable to you.  Google and Bing will "offer" free amounts if you use their webmaster tools, but in our experience this has not been very successful.  Not saying that it can not be, but if you are going to be successful, be prepared to open your wallet, because it can become costly.

After reading this article you may feel that this is a lot of work, that is because it can be.  The main point is to grow your business.  At times this can be done yourself, but if you are not tech savy, you may want to consider hiring someone else to do this.  However, consider your cost because you do want to get the best value for your money, just like your customer...who is searching for your business...right now!
Have a Blessed day!

Changes in Google's April 21st Algorithm

Picture
It is widely known that Google will be changing it s Algorithm on April 21st.  We believe Google will launch a new mobile crawler (probably with an Android user-agent) that can do a better job of crawling single-page web apps, Android apps, and maybe even Deep Links in iOS apps. The new Mobile-Friendly guidelines that launched last month focus on exposing JS and CSS because Android apps are built in Java, and single-page web apps rely heavily on JavaScript for their fluid, app-like experience.

Garry Illyes mentioned that Google is retiring their old AJAX indexing instructions, but did not say how they would be replaced, except to specify in a Google+ post that Google would not click links to get more content. Instead, they would need an OnLoad event to trigger further crawling. These webmaster instructions for making AJAX crawlable were often relied on as a way to make single-page web apps crawlable, and we think that feeds will play a role here, too, as part of the replacement. Relying more heavily on feeds also makes it easier for Google to scrape data directly into SERPS, which they have been doing more and more. This probably will include the ability to scrape forms directly from Rich snippets.

We also think mobile UX indicators that are currently showing at the bottom of the Google PageSpeed tool will play into the new mobile algorithm—we have actually witnessed Google testing their inclusion in the Mobile-Friendly tool already, as shown below, and of course, they were recently added to everyone's Webmaster Tools reports. It is possible that the current focus on CSS and JavaScript is to ensure that as many pages are in the new index as possible at launch.

What about sites that redirect to a mobile subdomain?

Answer: This is an interesting question, because immediately after the roll-out of the Mobile-Friendly tagging, we actually saw significantly more mDot ('m.') websites ranking well in the mobile SERPS. It's almost like they counted the mobile subdomain as a Mobile-Friendly signal, but started the algorithm fresh, with no historical data to indicate which other sites had fewer obvious signals of mobility, like a responsive design, or an adaptive or dynamically served mobile site. It is also interesting to note that many of the Google representatives seem to have recently backed off of their strong insistence on responsive design. They still say that it is the least error-prone, and easiest to crawl and index, but they also now seem to be more willing to acknowledge the other viable mobile site architectures.

Picture

How do I know if my site meets Google's requirements for mobile friendliness?

Google has created a Mobile-Friendliness tool that will give you a 'yes' or 'no' answer on a per-url basis. Pages are evaluated individually, so another quick way to get a sense for how your top pages perform is to do a "site:" query for the domain in question on your phone. That will allow you to see all the pages indexed to the domain, and evaluate which ones are considered Mobile-Friendly and which are not, without having to submit them to the tool one at a time.

Google has been clear that Mobile-Friendly test results are binary, meaning that your page is either Mobile-Friendly or it is not. There is no 50% or 70% Mobile-Friendly result possible—no middle ground. They have also taken care to specify that Google's Mobile-Friendly evaluations are somewhat instant, implying that there is no proving-time or "sandbox" associated with the tag, but this could be somewhat misleading. There may be no intentional time-delay before a page is awarded the Mobile-Friendly notation, but it will only change after a crawl of the site indicates that the page is now Mobile-Friendly, so it is close to instantaneous if the pages are getting crawled on a very regular basis.

We have found that the tool result does not necessarily match up with what we are seeing on our phones. We have occasionally also noticed that sometimes two pages in the same page template will perform differently, even though the content that changes between the template is primarily text. Both of these variations could simply be an indication of real-time delay between the tool and the crawler—the tool does an ad-hoc check on the URL to assess mobile-friendliness, but if the bot has not been by the site to evaluate its mobile friendliness recently, then the page in question would not yet have the Mobile-Friendly designation in the SERP. With this in mind, remember that when you are updating a page, and pushing it live for testing, you must use the tool to see if the update has been successful, until the site is re-crawled. This also means that once you see success in the tool, the best way to get the Mobile-Friendly designation to show up in the results faster might just be to push a sitemap in Webmaster tools, and try to trigger a fresh crawl.

Will having a mobile app impact my mobile rankings

Answer: There are two things to consider here. First, if a mobile search query is highly correlated with mobile app listings (the app "download pages" in the Google Play and iOS App Stores), your app could see significantly more visibility within mobile search results pages. This is because Google has started treating apps as a new kind of universal search result, returning an "App Pack" of Google Play results for certain searches on Android devices (shown at the right), and adding an Apps drop-down to the main nav-bar on iOS devices (not shown).

An "App Pack" is a group of related apps that rank together for a given query, shown together in a box separate from the inline organic search results. It has different formatting and an "Apps" header. These often float to the top of a mobile search result, pushing the second or sometimes even the first organic result below the fold. This is also discussed in Justin Briggs' article about apps. Currently, there is a high correlation between Google Play "App Pack" rankings and exact-match keywords in the app title. Google also seems to be evaluating app quality here and tries to serve only higher-than-average rated apps in the App Pack (this generally tends to be around a 3.5 – 4 star minimum for common keyword phrases).

If Google starts to serve these App Packs on iOS device searches as well, all apps that have keyword-optimized titles and have high-quality ratings and reviews could jump up to the top of the mobile web SERPs, increasing their visability and likely downloads. Conversely, mobile websites that currently enjoy an above-the-fold #1 or #2 organic ranking may get pushed below the fold in mobile SERPs, especially for queries that are highly correlated with mobile app results. This could cause a negative impact on mobile website visibility (without necessarily changing standard numeric rankings), in cases where a query returns a mobile App Pack—regardless of whether or not an app within that pack is yours.

Second, Mariya Moeva (Google Webmaster Trends Analyst) recently announced at SMX West that Google will be considering "high quality" apps to be a positive ranking factor in mobile search. We took this to mean that Deep Links between your website and your app will improve your website rankings in mobile search. Deep Links are different from app store listings in the App Store or Google Play, because they link directly to a specific screen within your app experience. They look just like regular links in the mobile search result, but when you click them, you are given the option of opening the link in on the web or in the app.

Currently, if you add Deep Links to your Android mobile app and associate your app URIs with corresponding (content-matching) webpages, Google will recognize the connection between your app content and your web content (and allow users who have your app installed to access your content directly in the mobile app).
Have a great day!

Why your site needs quality backlinks

Having Backlinks is important to show your site's strength, but stay away from paid, or low quality links!

If you have a website there is no doubt that you have tried to build links.  These backlinks for a time were a good way to have search engines pick up your site, and show you had connections.  However what developed from this is not quality backlinks, but "Paid" backlinks, which usually came from "Spam" website.  These Spam backlinks now are something that we need to eliminate as we develop our SEO plan for our site.
Due to this Google started to degrade or penalize websites for having bad backlinks.  These penalties would "lower" your websites appeal to Google, and lower your search rankings.  When this happens to site, there has to been time, effort, and money spent to recover the penalty from Google.  You can insure your home to protect it, but what about your website?
It is important to monitor your site's performance and who is linking back to you.  The only problem with this is that as business owner you may not have time, or staff on-hand to do so.  Jump Start Social Marketing is happy to help with this...yes it is a sales pitch, but not a scare tactic, just fact.  We only backlink to quality sites.  If those sites were to ever become a "danger" to your site, we break the connection with them.
So if you are up the challenge of building quality backlinks, how do you do so?  By using tools such as Google Webmaster Tools disavow tool.  The ability to do this is very simple, however it is important to use a multiple of sources to find the sites that may be bringing your rankings down, i.e. Bing Webmaster tools, Majestic, Google Webmaster tools.
Again, this is what we do, help your Business site grow.  We do the work so you can focus on your business.  If you will venture to see, we also do not sell backlinks.  This is a bad practice, one in which we do not recommend.
Have a Great Day!!

What will the new Google "Mobile-Friendly" update mean to your site?

Picture
If you have not already given your website the "Mobile-Friendly" face-lift it needs, it is time to do so.
Not being mobile friendly could possibly cost your business and website up to 41% of a decrease in Mobile traffic.  This number can be different for ever site.  However given that 30% of search access is from a smartphone (according to seoClarity) it is necessary to be prepared!

Having a website that is fully mobile friendly is just as important.  If your homepage is not mobile friendly, the cost could be greater due to the fact, that your site may be downgraded, even though you may have other mobile friendly pages.

Now as the business owner you may think..."Instead of worrying I will just simply hire a developer to fix all of my problems. "  This is a great idea in theory, but sometimes depending on your site, development may take some time. Due to the fact that the Google change is coming this month, time may be limited.  While hiring a company is the best to make sure you have the right "fix," it may cost you search results in the time it takes to transition your site.
We recommend that you use Google's Mobile Friendly Testing Tool to do a SEO health Check-up on your site!
Have a Great Day !

This will also be important in how your business is posted on Google search results on mobile devices:
If you can see the term "Mobile-friendly" is positioned beside Jump Start Social Marketing page description.
A notable feature of the mobile algorithm is that it analyzes mobile compatibility on a page-by-page basis, rather than a website-wide basis.
What does this mean to your site?

Your entire site will not be penalized, just the pages not optimized will be dropped lower.
If your site has some mobile-optimized pages, however some pages are not, Google will promote the pages with are optimized for mobile use.
The good news is, that it will be maintained day-by-day.
Gary Illyes of Google explained "That the algorithm runs in real-time, so technically, you can do it any day, and as soon as Google picks up on the change, the site will start to benefit from the new mobile-friendly algorithm change."
This means the algorithm will operate in real-time.

So what you do to prepare?
1st check the mobility of your site, and if you do not have a website, consider a company which will be optimizing your site for the change.  Google will also be deriving rankings based on APPs.  If your company does not offer an APP consider doing so. 3rd comply with Google...someone may be searching for you!
